The journey

One map, three dials, one cell.

Rows are maturity: what kind of work is in season. Columns are the stages your users move through. Gamify It picks the one cell where your product is stuck, with a confidence level and a runner-up.

Stage Map · Crewbook

Fictional, illustrative

A Stage Map of six maturity rows by seven lifecycle stages. For Crewbook, a fictional product, the binding cell is Early fit × Start; the runner-up is Early fit × Value; paid ads, points or badges and annual discounts are on the Not-now list.

Your bottleneck: Start

Early fit × Start, medium confidence. One cell, not forty ideas.

Three dials

They change how a cell is worked, not which cell.

Two products in the same cell can need very different moves. These three settings decide how the work is shaped for yours.

  • Habit route

Frequent habit · Utility habit · Partial habit · Recall and trust

Decides what Return means for you: a daily loop, the best way to do a weekly job, or a well-timed reorder.

  • Measurement Readiness

    L0 to L5

Caps what may be claimed from your data, and whether a measurement lane runs alongside the move.

  • Test Capacity

    Ready · Slow · Underpowered

Decides the experiment design: a standard A/B test, a bundled swing, a proxy metric or the low-traffic loop.

Constraint Rules

How one cell gets chosen.

Ten rules plus a measurement rule, each grounded in the books or the research, narrow the map to one binding cell. You can override any of them by stating your evidence; the override is saved with your Stage Card.

  1. R0

Measure only what the decision needs

If your tracking can’t support a claim, a cheap measurement lane runs alongside. The move is never blocked on it.

  2. R1

    Value before volume

If no segment’s retention flattens, and a second signal agrees, the bottleneck is Value.

  3. R2

    Habit before pressure

For subscription products, no heavy conversion pressure on the core loop until a habit exists. Stores and services, where buying is the value, are the exception.

  4. R3

    Biggest upstream leak first

Leaks are ranked by the drop times the users it affects each month, weighted by how clear the diagnosis is.

  5. R4

    Habit Path before habit features

Steer new users toward what your retained users did early, before adding streaks, points or badges.

  6. R5

    Phase before mechanic

Healthy retention with collapsing sign-ups means Discover. More engagement mechanics won’t refill the funnel.

  7. R6

    Protect veterans at maturity

At maturity, keeping current users comes before spending on new ones.

  8. R7

    Distribution from delight

Referral work is in season only after a segment shows fit, and the ask comes right after a win.

  9. R8

    Detectability

If your traffic can’t detect a meaningful change in about 10 weeks, the move gets bigger or runs the low-traffic loop. Never a micro-tweak.

  10. R9

    Split a decline by phase

When things shrink, separate a Discover collapse, a Stay collapse and novelty decay before acting.

  11. R10

    Respect the route

For products people need monthly or yearly, daily-habit mechanics are out of season; reorder, renewal and referral take their place.
