Appointment Dynamics (GT#21)

Declared or recurring times when acting earns a reward or is only possible then, such as a weekly release or a deal valid only in a slow hour. Predictable weekly timing builds a ritual users plan around, while constant availability invites putting things off.

Evidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested.ReturnPay

Plain label: scheduled windowsAlso known as: Appointment Dynamics, scheduled drops, happy hour

How it works

Scarcity of time (CD6) turns a schedule into a trigger. People expect the window and plan for it, and a fixed weekly time can become an internal cue, the way people know which day the trash goes out. Chou's example is a retailer's coupon that worked only between noon and one to fix a lunch-hour slump. Tuned to maximize checking rather than the user's own goals, it becomes compulsive.

What the research says

  • A Korean retailer's sculpture cast a shadow that formed a scannable coupon only between noon and 1 PM; noon sales reportedly rose 25%.

How to build it

B2B
Monthly reports delivered on a fixed day, with a short review ritual.
Web
New templates every Tuesday at 10 AM, announced in advance.
E-commerce
A real discount valid only in a slow hour or on a slow day, stated plainly.

What can go wrong

  • Windows set to maximize checking rather than serve the user's goals.
  • Daily windows for a weekly need.
  • 'Limited' windows that repeat endlessly.

Pairs well with

  • Tie timing to the user's own cadence.
  • Keep it distinct from GT#66: appointments are expected and fixed in time; breaks are sudden and relative.
