Free Lunch (GT#24)
Give a selected group something they would normally pay for, framed by a theme that explains why they were picked: a cause, a date, a contribution. Recipients feel singled out and tend to come back, and others hear about it.
Plain label: themed free gift for a chosen groupAlso known as: Free Lunch
How it works
Being picked for a free benefit taps the Calling side of CD1: people feel recognized as special rather than merely discounted, and the gift overlaps with reciprocity. A clear theme makes it meaningful instead of looking like an ordinary promotion. The selection rule is where it goes wrong: criteria that demean or exclude people backfire, and a gift that turns out to need a purchase destroys the effect.
Evidence warning
The chain's appearance-based selection rule would likely backfire today; tie selection to contribution, a cause or an inclusive condition.
What the research says
A restaurant chain with locations in Brazil, Spain and Mexico gave a themed free lunch to a selected group on International Women's Day; Chou expected repeat visits but reports no measured outcome.
