Water Coolers (GT#55)

An informal space where users talk beyond the core task, which bonds the community, spreads norms and connects veterans with newcomers. Chou's rule: forums help an existing community mingle but rarely create one, so seed the space before opening it.

Plain label: seeded community spaceAlso known as: Water Coolers, community forum, member lounge

How it works

Casual conversation spreads what people like us do (CD5 norms) and gives veterans a place to help newcomers. Chou's own experience: a cap on free monsters did not make him pay in a mobile game, but forum chatter about buying gold did. An empty forum is negative social proof, signaling that nobody is around. The same norm-spreading can normalize heavy spending or exclusion.

Before you start

  • An existing core of active users to seed the space before it opens to everyone

How to build it

Web
A members' lounge or community channel opened only after inviting power users and running a first event.
B2B
A customer community with office hours and a 'help another admin' thread.
Mobile
An off-topic channel next to the core feature, moderated from day one.

What can go wrong

  • Opening an empty forum, which signals that nobody uses the product.
  • Spending norms that pressure members to pay to belong.
  • No moderation, so trolls set the norms.

Pairs well with

  • Seed with power users and events before opening.
  • Recognize helpers (GT#61 as a veteran role).
