Make the core reward reliable before adding variety
First make the product deliver its promised result every time. Only then add variety, and end each payoff with a reason to come back, such as a preview of what's next, without holding back the answer.
Plain label: a payoff people can count onAlso known as: core value, reliable reward, job to be done, satisfy and leave wanting more, what's next
How it works
Variable rewards only work on top of a payoff users can count on; uncertainty about whether the product works at all is just unreliability. Once the core result is dependable, a glimpse of the next milestone leaves a reason to return without shortchanging the user.
Evidence warning
Deliberately under-delivering so users come back breaks trust and doesn't build a habit.
How to build it
- Web
- Fix the top failure cases of the core job (empty searches, broken imports) before adding surprises.
- B2B
- Measure how often the report is correct and on time before adding insight cards.
- Mobile
- After the result, show the next milestone or a related item instead of a dead end.
What can go wrong
- Adding game mechanics to a product that fails its main job.
- Ending sessions with nothing that points forward.
Pairs well with
- Fit the reward to why people come.
- Then stack reward types.
