Itch finder: ask why until a feeling appears

Find the internal trigger by studying what users feel just before they act. Write a short story of that moment, then keep asking why until a feeling shows up, such as boredom, loneliness, frustration, confusion, indecision or fear. Check the answer against observed behavior, not survey replies.

How it works

Internal triggers are learned links between a recurring feeling or routine and the product that relieves it. Unpleasant feelings are the most common prompts because they create mild discomfort that people act to remove, often without noticing. Users rarely name these feelings when asked, so the method relies on stories of the moment before use, repeated why questions and observed behavior.

How to build it

B2B
Shadow two or three users through a working day and note what happened in the minutes before they opened the tool, then run the why questions on that moment.
Mobile
A one-week diary in which users log what they were doing and feeling right before opening the app.
Web
Pair replays of returning visitors' sessions with short interviews about what prompted that visit.

What can go wrong

  • Stopping at a functional answer ('to save time') before a feeling appears.
  • Merging personas whose roots differ.
  • Mistaking a feeling the product creates for one it relieves.

Pairs well with

  • Write the result as a one-line habit statement.
  • Time external triggers to the moment the feeling shows up.
