A token fee instead of free for expert services
For expertise and high-stakes services, a modest fee or paid pilot can work better than free, because people judge quality by price when they cannot judge it directly. Chou's experience: a free audit made a client hesitate, where a few hundred dollars would have signaled value.
Plain label: small fee as a quality signalAlso known as: token fee, paid pilot, confident pricing
How it works
When buyers can't assess quality directly, they treat a higher price as a sign of a better service and a free offer as a red flag (CD6, perceived value). Chou also argues for confident pricing at launch and reads a non-purchase as perceived value falling below perceived cost, which includes the buyer's time, energy and reputation inside their organization, not only money. Price cannot hide weak value for long.
What the research says
A client of Chou's presumed a pricier PR firm was the better one; a three-month side-by-side trial showed the cheaper firm did better, and the pricier one was fired. Price signals quality before purchase but cannot hide weak value afterward.

How to build it
- B2B
- A paid pilot at a modest fee, credited against the first contract.
- Web
- Workshops or audits with a small fee and the full value stated.
What can go wrong
- A fee so high it blocks trial.
- Price used to hide weak value.
- Charging for something the category expects to be free.
Pairs well with
- Pair with a guarantee to lower perceived risk.
- Read a non-purchase as value vs full perceived cost, not price alone.
