Attainable goals with a visible path (OCT-P3)

For any reward, rank, contest or threat, check that the path is visible, a typical user believes they can do it, the effort fits the prize and there is an obvious next action. Any 'no' predicts users dismissing the goal instead of chasing it.

How it works

Motivation needs a goal that feels hard but possible. When it looks impossible, people protect their ego by belittling it and walking away, a reaction Chou finds across drives: envy with no path, scarce rewards out of reach, fear with no remedy, unwinnable leaderboards and contests whose effort dwarfs the prize. Pairing envy with a realistic path, such as being three skills from expert, turns it into aspiration.

How to build it

Web
Beside a top performer's profile, show the viewer's own gap and next step ('three skills from Expert').
Mobile
Personal goals set from the user's own baseline rather than a global target.
B2B
Contests with prizes proportionate to the effort and several winnable tiers.

What can go wrong

  • Goals within reach of only the top few.
  • Contests whose effort far exceeds the prize.
  • Threats with no way to avoid them.

Pairs well with

  • Run it on every dangled reward (GT#44) and leaderboard (GT#3).
  • Pair warnings with a remedy (fear plus a remedy).
