Can your product become a habit?

Two questions decide it: how often the behavior happens, and how much better your way is than the alternative. Frequency can make up for a small edge; a rare behavior never becomes a habit.

How often does it naturally happen?

How useful is it versus the best alternative?

Two axes and no scale, as in Hooked. Gray dots: the book’s Google and Amazon routes. The curve is illustrative.

Partial habit

Neither axis carries the behavior yet. Raise whichever is cheaper to move: frequency (toward the Google route) or utility (toward the Amazon route).

One step from the zone. Which is cheaper to move?

  • Utility: become best in category (toward the Amazon route).
  • Frequency: make it happen daily (toward the Google route).

Measure it with

  • Monthly or weekly actives
  • Repeat rate within the natural period
  • Stored value per user

From Hooked (Nir Eyal, pp.16-18): frequency can make up for a modest utility edge, and a behavior that is too rare never becomes a habit. The cell-by-cell placement is our reading of the book’s curve. Habits take weeks to months to form, so read habit metrics on a long horizon.
