Apple Watch: permission to rest
Apple Watch's Activity rings reward closing Move, Exercise and Stand goals every day, with streaks. watchOS 11 (2024) added Pause Rings: rest for a day, a week, a month or up to 90 days without breaking the streak.
The outcome · 2024
watchOS 11, announced in June 2024 and released Sept 16, 2024, lets people pause their rings for up to 90 days and resume their streak afterwards (9to5Mac, July 16, 2024). No public engagement metrics.

What they did. Three daily rings (Move, Exercise, Stand) with streaks and awards. watchOS 11 added Pause Rings for today, the rest of the week or month, or a custom period of up to 90 days, keeping the streak intact.
The mechanism. [Analyst inference] Closing a ring is a completion moment and a calendar chain HK-RWD24 (Hooked Ch.7); the streak adds loss aversion. Pausing is forgiving lapse recovery HK-RWD34 (Hooked Ch.4), which streak research suggests keeps people in the habit after an interruption F22 (On or off track: how broken streaks affect consumer decisions, Silverman & Barasch, Journal of Consumer Research, 2023).
The outcome. Pause up to 90 days (2024) without losing the streak Case grade C. Press or secondary reporting.. Apple has published no engagement data on the change.
What it means at your stage. Part of a pattern across Duolingo, Snapchat, Apple and Headspace: mature products soften streak pressure so life interruptions don't end the habit. If you have a streak, design the pause before you need it.
Caveats. Feature announcement only; no outcome numbers. Mechanism link Evidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested. [Analyst].

The techniques behind it
Each one is a starting point, not a recipe. Gamify It turns a technique into an experiment card for your product: the change, the metric, the guardrail and how long the test needs at your traffic.

Streaks and completion chains with a safety valve
a visible chain you can repair
Mark each finished unit with a clear 'done' moment and a visible chain of days, and ship forgiveness with it: freezes, repair windows, rest days, partial credit and a running total that survives a break. Never let one miss erase everything.

Grace systems and small executable losses
forgiving loss rules
Threaten a large loss but apply only small ones, and add forgiveness users value but cannot abuse: capped streak freezes, payment grace periods, a second chance when users expect the worst. Chou's practitioner sizes: 2-5% of what users invested is usually enough, 15% at most, never above 30%.
