Activation moments and the aha threshold

Work backward from the habit moment to the aha moment (first core value) to the setup moment (what must happen first), per account for team products. Find the product's own threshold by comparing retained and churned users across early actions, weighing coverage and precision, then confirm it with a randomized onboarding change.

Start

Plain label: setup, aha and habit momentsAlso known as: aha moment, magic number, activation threshold, time to value, Habit Path

Find the threshold.

  1. Pick the retention outcome, for example active in week 8.
  2. List candidate actions from days 1-14: setup steps, value events, connections, content created, integrations.
  3. Compare retention of users who did and didn't, scanning thresholds (1, 3, 5, 10…) for where the gain plateaus. Weigh coverage (share of retained users who hit it) and precision (share of those who hit it who retain).
  4. Control for channel, plan and persona: motivated users do everything.
  5. Test an onboarding change that pushes users toward the threshold, and keep it only if retention moves. These are Habit Testing's Codify and Modify steps. HK-MEA04 (Hooked Ch.8) HK-T13 (Hooked Ch.3)

Famous thresholds, with trust levels. Facebook's 7 friends in 10 days (first-party talk, correlational, B); Slack's 2,000 messages with 93% of such teams still using it (first-party, correlational); Twitter's 30 follows (B). Dropbox, LinkedIn and similar numbers circulate without first-party sources (C).

Time to value. Report the median and p75 (p90 for the first major win), never a mean.
