Humanity Hero (GT#27)

Tie each use or purchase to a concrete real-world benefit (a donation, a resource saved, a person helped) and show the running total, so the action feels like a contribution to a mission. It works only when the impact is real, measurable and delivered.

Evidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested.DiscoverStayPay

Plain label: real-world impact linkAlso known as: Humanity Hero, impact counter, cause-linked purchase

How it works

When every action visibly helps a cause, users gain a reason to act that is bigger than themselves (CD1), and the product they own keeps reminding them of the good they did. Chou's examples are one-for-one shoes and a quiz site that funded rice with every correct answer. After a purchase, true impact feedback also reassures buyers that they chose well. Vague or unverifiable claims flip the effect into distrust.

What the research says

  • TOMS reported 10 million pairs of shoes donated under one-for-one; FreeRice reported about 6,100 metric tons of rice funded through correct answers.

How to build it

E-commerce
At checkout, show the specific benefit this order funds and a running total, with a link to delivery evidence.
B2B
An admin recap of real savings (paper, hours, emissions) computed from the team's logged use.
Web
A per-user impact counter after each core action, backed by a published method.

What can go wrong

  • Causewashing: vague or unverifiable impact claims.
  • Impact that is promised but never delivered.
  • A cause unrelated to the product, which reads as a sales tactic.

Pairs well with

  • Publish how impact is measured and delivered.
  • Use it as the White Hat return after a conversion moment (OCT-M16).

    TOMS: One for One, retired

Nov 2019: TOMS retired One for One for a pledge of one third of net profits to grassroots causes (Retail Brew). Dec 2019: creditors took ownership of the company (CNBC). Many causes; a purpose mechanic is not a business model.
