TOMS: One for One, retired

TOMS promised to give a pair of shoes for every pair sold; Chou cites it as White Hat reassurance that turns a purchase into a contribution. In 2019 TOMS replaced One for One with a pledge of a third of its net profits, and in Dec 2019 its creditors took ownership.

The techniques behind it

Each one is a starting point, not a recipe. Gamify It turns a technique into an experiment card for your product: the change, the metric, the guardrail and how long the test needs at your traffic.

    Humanity Hero (GT#27)

    real-world impact link

Tie each use or purchase to a concrete real-world benefit (a donation, a resource saved, a person helped) and show the running total, so the action feels like a contribution to a mission. It works only when the impact is real, measurable and delivered.

  • TechniqueEvidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies.

    Reassurance window after commitment

fast first value after sign-up or purchase

Right after someone signs up or buys, confirm what they now have and get them to a first quick win in the same session ("Your workspace is set up; bring in your first file now."). Confidence peaks just after a decision, and that window is the best moment to turn it into use.
