FOMO Punch (GT#84)

A pointed prompt that makes not acting feel like a regret, used mainly to break the 'I'll do it tomorrow' inertia of interested prospects. The honest version uses real numbers about what the user is missing; invented envy and guilt-tripping copy cross the line.

Evidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested.DiscoverReturnPay

Plain label: honest missed-value reminderAlso known as: FOMO Punch, fear of missing out

How it works

Anticipated regret turns loss avoidance (CD8) against inaction: people picture how they will feel if others benefit while they do not. Chou's examples are Steve Jobs's pitch to recruit John Sculley and a postcode lottery where non-players watch their neighbors celebrate. It works best in Discovery and on reactivation, used sparingly, because constant regret messaging turns into anxiety and nagging.

What the research says

  • The Dutch Postcode Lottery pays every participating household in the winning postcode; Chou cites research that fear of watching neighbors win made it outperform other lotteries.

How to build it

B2B
'While you were away, your team completed three sprints', with a link to rejoin, based on real activity.
Web
An opportunity-cost calculator that uses the prospect's own numbers.
Email and SMS
One reactivation message showing what changed since the user left, instead of a series of guilt messages.

What can go wrong

  • Invented envy or exaggerated numbers.
  • Copy that shames users for declining.
  • Repeated regret messages that turn into nagging.

Pairs well with

  • Always offer a specific, easy next step (fear plus a remedy).
  • Follow with White Hat reassurance once users act.
