CD8 Loss & Avoidance
The drive to avoid losing what we have, wasting what we invested, or missing a fading opportunity. It is the purest Black Hat drive: strong at critical moments, corrosive when spread everywhere. Chou's rules are to apply it only at a few critical bumps, keep executed losses small, always offer a remedy, and return to White Hat.
Plain label: avoiding the loss of what you haveAlso known as: Loss & Avoidance, Core Drive 8
Essence
Losses weigh more than equal gains, so the fear of losing progress, status or an opportunity moves people strongly CD8 (Actionable Gamification Ch.12, p.307). Loss motivation grows with what users have invested; new users have little to lose. Often CD8 is another drive in reverse: fear that the mission collapses, or of looking like a loser in front of others.
Position
- Hat: Black, at the bottom of the octagon. Brain side: none; it sits on the vertical axis.
- Strongest phases: Discovery (breaking the inertia of 'I'll start tomorrow') and the Endgame (habits and stored value), plus critical bumps such as trial end and renewal.
Watch-outs
- Black Hat Rebound: constant pressure raises short-term metrics until worn-out users leave for good.
- Fear without a remedy produces denial, not action.
- Executable loss: Chou's practitioner sizes are 2-5% of what users invested, 15% at most, never above 30% Evidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested..
- Engineered Endgame fear: Chou's later chapters ask for a White Hat Endgame and let CD8 emerge on its own.
- Captivity: value held hostage hides churn that is waiting to happen.
