CD4 Ownership & Possession
The drive to improve, protect and gain more of what feels like ours: profiles, workspaces, collections, currencies and systems that learn us. It is the most extrinsic drive and sits in the dual middle band, empowering when it gives control and Black Hat when possessions start to own their owner.
Plain label: things that feel like yoursAlso known as: Ownership & Possession, Core Drive 4
Essence
Once something feels like ours, we value it more and want to improve it, protect it and add to it CD4 (Actionable Gamification Ch.8, p.160). Chou covers virtual goods and currencies, collecting, customization, products that learn the user, the endowment effect and the IKEA effect, plus commitment effects that make a choice feel like one's own.
Position
- Hat: dual. White when it gives users control; Black when owned things become a burden or a trap. Gamify It records the tilt on each rating.
- Brain side: Left, the most analytical drive.
- Phases [Analyst]: building in Onboarding, collections and monitoring in Scaffolding, personalization in the Endgame.
Watch-outs
- Ownership without feedback fades, as with the pet-rock craze.
- It feeds loss avoidance (CD8): the more people own, the more they fear losing it, which is where lock-in and data hostage risks start.
- Crowding out: as the most extrinsic drive, it can make people selfish and suppress curiosity and creativity.
Home techniques
Collection Sets (GT#16), Monitor Attachment (GT#42), Build-From-Scratch (GT#43), Exchangeable Points (GT#75), Alfred Effect (GT#83); also ownership before purchase.
Measured evidence for a rating [Analyst]
Stored value per user, and churn by stored-value decile.
