Collection Sets (GT#16)

Hand out items labeled as part of a themed set, so owning two or three of four creates a pull to complete it. Chou notes that pieces hold attention longer than one-off prizes and keep the budget in check, because only completed sets claim the big reward.

How it works

Incompleteness creates tension, and items gain value from belonging to a set even when they are of little use alone (CD4, with CD2 at completion). Pieces can come predictably, one per action, or at random (CD7), and rare or season-locked pieces add scarcity (CD6). When scarcity pushes people to buy single pieces with real money, the technique tips into Black Hat, and a fragment given where users expected a full reward feels insulting.

How to build it

Web
A learning series shown as five badge silhouettes that fill as lessons are completed.
E-commerce
A digital stamp card for six seasonal products that earns a free item when complete.
B2B
A 'power user kit' of four integrations with a visible '3 of 4'.

What can go wrong

  • Rare pieces sold for money with hidden odds.
  • Time-limited pieces with no catch-up path.
  • A fragment given where users expected a full reward.

Pairs well with

  • Decide between fixed and random distribution on purpose (GT#72 for random).
  • Grow completed sets into GT#40 Chain Combos.
