Chain Combos (GT#40)

Reward combinations whose benefits compound, so users who master several parts of a system get more than the sum, for example a paid tier plus five certifications unlocking an advanced toolkit. Chou uses it in his own membership plan and lists combos as an open research question.

Plain label: compounding combinationsAlso known as: Chain Combos, combos

How it works

Pulling off a combination that multiplies results feels exhilarating and strategic (CD3, with CD2 accomplishment). Combos give veterans a reason to master several areas and reward planning over grinding. Chou describes them in his design-from-scratch chapters rather than the drive chapters, and an unbalanced combo can break the reward economy.

How to build it

B2B
Customers who hold the paid tier and complete five certifications unlock an advanced toolkit.
Web
Loyalty multipliers that stack, with users choosing how to combine them.
Mobile
Completing a set of programs unlocks a combined 'master' program.

What can go wrong

  • A combo so strong it becomes the only strategy.
  • Combos that require paying for every component.
  • Hidden rules users discover only afterward.

Pairs well with

  • Build combos on top of GT#16 Collection Sets.
  • Balance the economy before launching combos (GT#75).
