CD3 Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback
The drive to take part in a creative process: combine tools into a strategy, see the result right away and adjust. Chou calls it the golden corner because it is both White Hat and intrinsic, and the main source of evergreen engagement; it is also the hardest drive to build and costs attention new users rarely have.
Plain label: trying combinations and seeing the resultsAlso known as: Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback, Core Drive 3, golden corner
Essence
Play in its creative sense: Lego is the anchor image CD3 (Actionable Gamification Ch.7, p.123). Users need a clear goal, a purpose that matters to them, varied tools they own, and room for their own strategy. When 100 successful users take 100 different paths, the choices are real; when they all take one path, they are not.
Position
- Hat: White. Brain side: Right.
- Strongest phases: Scaffolding and Endgame. It is weak in Onboarding because creation takes attention.
Watch-outs
- Dominant strategies turn real choices into cosmetic ones.
- Stale challenges: user creativity still needs a renewing source of challenge, or the loop decays.
- Crowding out: paying people (CD4) for an activity they enjoy creatively can push out their own reason for doing it.
- Obligation overload shifts the experience toward Black Hat and erodes it.
Home techniques
Plant Picker (GT#11), Milestone Unlock (GT#19), Boosters (GT#31), Poison Picker (GT#89), Chain Combos (GT#40); also evergreen creation.
Measured evidence for a rating [Analyst]
The share of active users who create or customize, and strategy diversity: how many distinct paths reach the Win-State.
