Milestone Unlock (GT#19)

Unlock a new, useful capability right at a natural stopping point, so users want to try it, test it on harder work and notice that the next milestone is close. A strong variant unlocks the tool that solves the user's most recent pain.

Plain label: capability unlocked at a milestoneAlso known as: Milestone Unlock, counter-unlock

How it works

A fresh capability at the moment users planned to stop sparks curiosity (CD7) and creative testing (CD3), and success with it feeds accomplishment (CD2). Chou cites players who meant to stop at 11 PM and kept going until 4 AM as proof that it works; product teams should read that as a warning. The healthy version respects stopping points and lets users try the new tool in their next session.

How to build it

B2B
After a team resolves 200 tickets by hand, unlock the automation that would have saved them the effort.
Mobile
Finishing a unit unlocks practice conversations on that vocabulary, available from the next session.
Web
The tenth project unlocks templates generated from the user's own projects.

What can go wrong

  • Unlocks timed to keep people up late.
  • Withholding basics that users needed from day one.
  • Unlocks that only make sense if used immediately.

Pairs well with

  • Unlock the tool that solves the user's last pain point.
  • Grow complexity with skill (GT#37 Evolved UI).
