Monitor Attachment (GT#42)
Give users something of their own to watch, such as their stats, account health or a living object that reflects their care. Watching builds familiarity and stewardship, and they come to want the number to improve; pair each metric with a lever they can pull.
Plain label: watched numbers users want to improveAlso known as: Monitor Attachment, personal dashboard
How it works
Regular exposure breeds attachment and a sense of ownership over what is watched (CD4), checking for change adds curiosity (CD7), and acting on it invites experiments (CD3). Chou's example is bloggers who check their analytics many times a day and test titles and posting times. Without a lever, the habit becomes anxious checking of a vanity metric.
What the research says
Zajonc (1968) showed that repeated exposure increases liking; Chou uses it to explain why watching a dashboard builds attachment.
AG Ch8 (study grade A; the link to dashboards is Chou's inference), 1968
How to build it
- Web
- A creator dashboard from day one, even at three visitors, with one tip for raising each number.
- B2B
- A weekly 'your team this week' panel with account health and the one action that would improve it.
- Mobile
- A virtual plant or pet that reflects the user's habit and recovers gently after a lapse.
What can go wrong
- Vanity metrics with no lever.
- Compulsive checking.
- Harsh penalties when the watched thing dies.
Pairs well with
- Show the first data point quickly during onboarding.
- Pair each metric with an action users can take.
