Plant Picker / Meaningful Choices (GT#11)

Offer choices with real trade-offs and no clearly best option, so users reach the Win-State in their own style and come back to try other strategies. Chou judges it by how many distinct paths successful users take.

Plain label: real trade-off choicesAlso known as: Plant Picker, Meaningful Choices, strategy choices

How it works

Choosing a strategy from a limited set of tools under constraints is the creative core of CD3: users combine, see the result and adjust. Chou's model is Plants vs. Zombies, where limited slots and resources make many strategies viable. If one option becomes dominant the choice turns cosmetic and the drive fades, and too many options at once cause paralysis, so offer two or three per decision.

How to build it

Web
Three learning tracks (build a project, study the theory, or tackle challenges) that end in the same certification.
B2B
Equivalent workflow styles (board, list, timeline) with different strengths, so teams pick what suits them.
Mobile
Plans assembled from modules with real trade-offs, such as short and intense vs long and easy.

What can go wrong

  • A dominant option that most users pick and win with.
  • Cosmetic choices that change nothing.
  • Too many options at once, which makes users feel stupid.

Pairs well with

  • Log the path distribution and rebalance when one path dominates.
  • Introduce options gradually (GT#37 Evolved UI).
