Pay in recognition, not small cash
Don't attach small or rare cash to things people already do for social or personal reasons. Reward contribution with recognition, reputation and privileges that mean something, ideally given by peers, and if you pay, pay meaningfully.
Plain label: recognition over moneyAlso known as: overjustification, extrinsic rewards, cash bounty, points with privileges, peer recognition, kudos, help others
How it works
Small payments turn a social act into a job and invite comparison with real wages. Expected, tangible rewards tied to a task tend to lower interest in tasks people already found interesting, while recognition and informative feedback do far less harm, especially when points unlock real privileges.
Evidence warning
The undermining effect is strongest for activities people already enjoy; for dull tasks, incentives can raise quantity without much harm.
What the research says
Expected tangible rewards lowered free-choice intrinsic motivation (about d = -0.36) across 128 studies; unexpected rewards did not.

- B2B
- Public credit for internal knowledge-base answers, visible to managers.
What can go wrong
