Make stored value visible, and exportable

Show users what they have built in the product (their library, history, notes, reputation, working setups) in summaries and anniversaries, and let them export it. Visible value raises the felt cost of leaving; export keeps it a gift rather than a hostage.

Plain label: show what users have builtAlso known as: stored value, switching costs, account summary, export, moat, library, annotations

How it works

What users put into a product makes it better for them and harder to replace; a rival can copy features but not a user's history or followers. Making that value visible reminds users why they stay. Using it as a guilt weapon at cancellation turns ownership into resentment.

Evidence warning

How to build it

B2B
A yearly account summary: reports built, automations running, hours saved.
Mobile
A library count on the profile (songs, playlists, notes), with export in settings.
Web
An honest summary of what is kept at cancellation, next to a one-click export.
Email and SMS
Anniversary emails that show what the user created that year.

What can go wrong

  • Confirmshaming in the cancel flow.
  • No export, which turns value into a trap.

Pairs well with

  • Store value that makes the product better with use.
  • Gift-like anniversary messages.

Mint: stored value didn't save it

Mint shut down on March 23, 2024; Intuit pointed users to Credit Karma (NerdWallet). Many causes, chiefly the owner's strategy. The closure doesn't refute the mechanics; it shows they can't outweigh a business decision.
