Mint: stored value didn't save it
Hooked praised Mint for a clear one-button external trigger and for linked bank accounts, stored value that makes the app more useful over time. Intuit shut Mint down on March 23, 2024 and moved users to Credit Karma.
The outcome · 2024
Mint shut down on March 23, 2024; Intuit pointed users to Credit Karma (NerdWallet). Many causes, chiefly the owner's strategy. The closure doesn't refute the mechanics; it shows they can't outweigh a business decision.

What they did (as Hooked describes it). Emails with one obvious action button, and linked bank and card accounts that build a richer picture of your money over time.
The mechanism. A single-action explicit trigger HK-TRG03 (Hooked Ch.2); account linking and data aggregation as investment HK-INV12 (Hooked Ch.5) that becomes non-transferable stored value HK-MON06 (Hooked Ch.1).

What it means at your stage. Tie engagement to a monetization plan early HK-MON12 (Hooked Ch.8). A product with strong user lock-in and weak economics is exposed to its owner's priorities.
Caveats. [Analyst inference; many causes] The shutdown reflects Intuit's strategy, not a failure of the habit loop. Mechanism link Evidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested..

The techniques behind it
Each one is a starting point, not a recipe. Gamify It turns a technique into an experiment card for your product: the change, the metric, the guardrail and how long the test needs at your traffic.
- TechniqueEvidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies.
Store value that makes the product better with use
a product that improves as you use it
Design the investments users make so they build up in forms that improve the next visit: content they collect, data about themselves, people they follow or who follow them, and skill with the tool. Say plainly when a recommendation comes from what they stored.
- TechniqueEvidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies.
Make stored value visible, and exportable
show what users have built
Show users what they have built in the product (their library, history, notes, reputation, working setups) in summaries and anniversaries, and let them export it. Visible value raises the felt cost of leaving; export keeps it a gift rather than a hostage.
