Store value that makes the product better with use

Design the investments users make so they build up in forms that improve the next visit: content they collect, data about themselves, people they follow or who follow them, and skill with the tool. Say plainly when a recommendation comes from what they stored.

Plain label: a product that improves as you use itAlso known as: stored value, content library, personal data, follow graph, audience, skill, personalization, sync

How it works

Stored value raises the product's usefulness with each cycle and makes switching costly, because a rival lacks the user's library, history, network and practiced skill. The book names five forms (content, data, followers, reputation and skill); reputation has its own entry.

Evidence warning

What the research says

  • A professional network found that users who entered even a little profile information were much likelier to return (internal remark reported in the book).

How to build it

Web
Import, save-for-later and searchable libraries, with 'because you saved X' recommendations.
Mobile
Follow topics or people during onboarding and after good sessions, with easy mute and unfollow.
B2B
Connected accounts and saved views that fill in a fuller picture over time.
E-commerce
Purchase history and saved sizes that improve recommendations, editable by the customer.

What can go wrong

  • Collecting data that never improves anything for the user.
  • Deliberately non-standard interfaces that trap skill.
  • No export.

Pairs well with

  • Make stored value visible.
  • Ask for each investment right after a reward.

Mint: stored value didn't save it

Mint shut down on March 23, 2024; Intuit pointed users to Credit Karma (NerdWallet). Many causes, chiefly the owner's strategy. The closure doesn't refute the mechanics; it shows they can't outweigh a business decision.
