Trophy Shelves (GT#64)

A passive, always-visible display of hard-won achievements on a profile or avatar, set up once and seen by every visitor. Chou ranks it below usable rewards: a reward that can only be displayed ends up as just a trophy.

Plain label: passive achievement displayAlso known as: Trophy Shelves, profile showcase

How it works

Showing achievements to an audience that understands their difficulty adds social recognition (CD5) to accomplishment (CD2) and ownership (CD4). Chou contrasts it with Brag Buttons: the button is announcing your title out loud, the shelf is the title printed in your bio. It also shows newcomers what is possible. Alone it has little pull; paired with usable perks it helps hold veterans.

How to build it

Web
Profile badges and 'member since' flair that visitors see, earned only through hard milestones.
B2B
Verified-expert marks on community answers and in partner directories.
Mobile
Avatar frames unlocked by rare achievements.

What can go wrong

  • Display-only rewards with no use.
  • Badges anyone can get, so the shelf shows nothing.
  • Displays that shame users with few achievements.

Pairs well with

  • Pair with usable perks (GT#31 Boosters).
  • Use GT#57 Brag Buttons for the moment of the win and the shelf afterward.

    Airbnb: reputation beats similarity

In an experiment with 8,906 Airbnb users, high reputation significantly increased trust between dissimilar users, offsetting the pull toward similar others; analyses of about 1M real Airbnb interactions agreed (Abrahao et al., PNAS, Sept 2017).
