Mercado Libre: seller reputation as currency

Mercado Libre shows each seller's reputation as a red-to-green thermometer built from claims, late shipments and cancellations, with MercadoLider status on top. Its loyalty program became the paid MELI+ subscription. In Q2 2026 it reported 89M unique active buyers and MELI+ subscribers up 72% year over year.

What they did. A seller reputation "thermometer" from red to green, computed over a rolling window from claims, late shipments and cancellations, with MercadoLider, Gold and Platinum status for top sellers (reported thresholds vary by country). Buyer loyalty levels were replaced by MELI+, a paid subscription with free shipping and streaming benefits.

The mechanism. [Analyst inference] Reputation is stored value with real economic weight HK-INV16 (Hooked Ch.5): it is computed from behavior sellers control, shown publicly as a simple level GT#1 (Actionable Gamification Ch.6, p.116) and displayed like a trophy shelf GT#64 (Actionable Gamification Ch.9, p.216). Buyers read it as verified social proof INF-T-SP-24 (Influence Ch.4, p.120). Losing a color is a loss sellers work to avoid, and status tiers carry real visibility.

The outcome. 89M unique active buyers (2026) Case grade A. From a regulator, a public filing or a peer-reviewed study. in Q2 2026, and MELI+ subscribers up 72% YoY.

What it means at your stage. For marketplaces, build a trust ladder: reputation from behaviors sellers control, a public color or level, and ranking visibility tied to it. Measure the reputation distribution of sellers and buyer conversion by reputation band.

Caveats. [Analyst inference; many causes] Filing figures cover the whole business; no data isolates the reputation system. Threshold details come from seller forums and vary by country. Mechanism link Evidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested..

The techniques behind it

Each one is a starting point, not a recipe. Gamify It turns a technique into an experiment card for your product: the change, the metric, the guardrail and how long the test needs at your traffic.

  • TechniqueEvidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested.

    Reputation that carries real value

    earned reputation as stored value

Let users earn a reputation (ratings, badges, response scores) that changes what they get: better ranking, higher prices, more trust, new privileges. People stay where their reputation lives.

  • TechniqueEvidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested.

    Status Points (GT#1)

    progress score

A score that rises with meaningful actions, telling the system how close each user is to a Win-State and telling the user where they stand. The point values themselves announce what the product cares about, so weight them by what matters to the user.

  • TechniqueEvidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested.

    Trophy Shelves (GT#64)

    passive achievement display

A passive, always-visible display of hard-won achievements on a profile or avatar, set up once and seen by every visitor. Chou ranks it below usable rewards: a reward that can only be displayed ends up as just a trophy.

  • TechniqueEvidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.

    Verified, representative reviews

    full, verified rating picture

Show reviews the way they are: the full star distribution, verified-buyer labels, dates, critical reviews with replies, disclosed incentives, and a link to every review in place of a hand-picked wall. Representative proof is believed; a wall of five-star quotes is discounted.

  • TechniqueEvidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested.

Status tiers that grant real power

tiers with visible criteria and real perks

Ranks and tiers change behavior only when they bring powers or standing others recognize, and when the criteria for the next tier are visible. Chou's audit of a navigation app found its top rank barely changed behavior because it gave no real power, while earned seller tiers on a marketplace did.
