Status tiers that grant real power

Ranks and tiers change behavior only when they bring powers or standing others recognize, and when the criteria for the next tier are visible. Chou's audit of a navigation app found its top rank barely changed behavior because it gave no real power, while earned seller tiers on a marketplace did.

Plain label: tiers with visible criteria and real perksAlso known as: status tiers, seller levels, ranks

How it works

A tier marks accomplishment (CD2) and carries social standing (CD5). When the next tier's criteria are visible and earned through contribution, users have a clear goal; when the tier unlocks moderation tools, early access or lower fees, it is worth pursuing. Tiers earned by spending alone, or with hidden criteria, teach users the system is about money.

How to build it

Web
Seller or creator tiers with a 'next tier needs X' panel and perks such as lower fees or featured placement.
B2B
Partner tiers that unlock early access and a directory listing, with published criteria.
Mobile
Contributor levels that unlock moderation tools in the community.

What can go wrong

  • Tiers that grant nothing.
  • Spend-only tiers.
  • Hidden criteria, or criteria changed without notice.

Pairs well with

  • Keep top tiers genuinely hard (AG p.486).
  • When tiers change, reward loyal members first (loyalty before defection).

    Airbnb: reputation beats similarity

In an experiment with 8,906 Airbnb users, high reputation significantly increased trust between dissimilar users, offsetting the pull toward similar others; analyses of about 1M real Airbnb interactions agreed (Abrahao et al., PNAS, Sept 2017).
