Status Points (GT#1)

A score that rises with meaningful actions, telling the system how close each user is to a Win-State and telling the user where they stand. The point values themselves announce what the product cares about, so weight them by what matters to the user.

Evidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested.StartReturn

Plain label: progress scoreAlso known as: Status Points, XP, experience points

How it works

Points give fast feedback on progress (CD2) and double as a Feedback Mechanic. Chou separates lifetime points from points that reset each period, and points that only rise from points that can fall; falling points add loss pressure. In Discovery and Onboarding users read the point table to judge whether the game is worth playing, and points for actions that only help the business tell them the designer is extracting value.

What the research says

  • Chou weighted points on his own blog so a comment earned far more than a social share, to signal the game was about engaging with readers rather than promoting the owner.

How to build it

Web
Show the change after each action ('+40, 60 to the next level') and a weekly score that resets next to the lifetime total.
B2B
A workspace health score that rises with adoption of the features that predict retention, never with clicks.
Mobile
A consistency score that dips slightly after missed days and shows how to recover.

What can go wrong

  • Points for actions that only benefit the business, which users read as self-serving.
  • Nothing depends on the points, so they are noise (the PBL Fallacy).
  • Points that can fall add loss pressure users never signed up for.

Pairs well with

  • Write one line stating what the point table says the product values, and check that users agree.
  • Keep a separate spendable wallet (GT#75) so spending never erases progress.
