What they did. Weekly leagues: learners are grouped with a small cohort, earn XP for lessons, and the top finishers are promoted to a higher tier while the bottom ones drop. Every week starts fresh.

The mechanism. A leaderboard GT#3 (Actionable Gamification Ch.6, p.119) on top of status points GT#1 (Actionable Gamification Ch.6, p.116) works when it stays winnable. Grouping people with similar peers INF-T-SP-17 (Influence Ch.4, p.107) and modeling slightly-ahead learners HK-RWD04 (Hooked Ch.4) keeps the top within reach, and the weekly reset keeps a bad week from becoming a permanent loss.

The outcome. +17% learning time (2023) Case grade B. Company-reported numbers.; learners studying at least an hour a day, five days a week, tripled. Over the same four years Duolingo's DAU grew 4.5x and its current-user retention rate rose 21% (many causes).

What it means at your stage. Leaderboards belong after the habit exists (M3-M4), with small cohorts of similar users and a frequent reset. A global all-time leaderboard demotivates everyone outside the top. Watch quality guardrails: XP per lesson can be gamed.

Caveats. Company-reported; no control details published; leagues launched alongside other retention work. Mechanism link Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits..

    near-peer rankings

Rank users on criteria tied to the Desired Action, but in a form where most people can still win: neighbors just above and below, team boards, boards that reset weekly, or boards limited to friends or a similar cohort. Always show the action that moves the user up.

A score that rises with meaningful actions, telling the system how close each user is to a Win-State and telling the user where they stand. The point values themselves announce what the product cares about, so weight them by what matters to the user.
