Reduce social deviance: make the behavior feel normal

When a behavior feels out of step with what peers do, show honest evidence that people like the user do it, let newcomers watch similar or slightly more experienced peers succeed, and offer private or discreet modes for sensitive uses.

Evidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies.DiscoverStart

Plain label: make it feel normal and safe to doAlso known as: social proof, peer modeling, private mode, normalizing copy, discreet use, acquired taste

How it works

People hesitate to do things that look unusual among their peers. Seeing someone similar rewarded for a behavior changes what feels normal, and small repeated exposures make unfamiliar things easier to accept. Privacy removes the audience when the behavior is personal.
