Reduce time: faster paths and smaller first doses

When time is the scarce resource, make the action fit the minutes the user has: fast loads, instant results, sessions that finish in a minute or two, and content split into small daily units with the most engaging part first.

Plain label: less waiting, shorter sessionsAlso known as: time to value, chunking, daily units, starter dose, microlearning, latency, idle moments

How it works

If a task doesn't fit the time available, people postpone it, and postponed tasks rarely happen. Small daily units hide the size of the whole goal, short sessions fit the idle moments of a day, and a tiny starter dose lets newcomers succeed before they are asked for more.

What the research says

  • Putting the most engaging material first raised plan completion in a reading app (company-reported).

    Hooked Ch.7 (YouVersion), 2013

How to build it

Mobile
A two-minute starter mode (one lesson, one set, one journal line) that grows only after a week of use.
Web
Optimistic interface updates and prefetching so the result appears before the user waits.
B2B
Show today's three items instead of the whole backlog.
Email and SMS
Put the day's unit inside the message so it can be done without opening the app.

What can go wrong

  • Shrinking the unit until it delivers no value.
  • Keeping the starter dose forever, so users plateau.

Pairs well with

  • Show progress across the small units.
  • Send the reminder at the time the user picked.
