Name the scarcest resource at each step, and benchmark the steps

Walk the path from need to reward and count taps, screens, fields and seconds, for you and two competitors. At each step, name which of six resources the user is shortest of right then: time, money, physical effort, brain cycles, social comfort or routine. Turn the worst steps into three testable simplifications.

How it works

Ease is not one thing: a step is as hard as the resource the user lacks most in that context. A busy parent lacks time, a novice lacks attention for new concepts, a buyer on a tight budget lacks money. Naming the scarce resource points to the right fix, and a competitor benchmark shows where you are slower than users expect.

How to build it

Web
A teardown table: taps, screens, fields and seconds to reward for your product, two competitors and one best-in-class reference.
Mobile
Repeat the walk on a small phone, on cellular data, one-handed.
B2B
Audit separately for the admin who sets up and the end user who works in it daily.

What can go wrong

  • Auditing on the team's fast laptops.
  • Averaging across segments with different scarce resources.

Pairs well with

  • Then reduce that specific resource with the matching technique.
  • Ability-first triage tells you whether effort is the problem at all.
