Remove steps between the trigger and the first reward

List every step from the moment the need appears to the reward, then delete, merge, prefill or defer steps until the shortest path remains. The first reward should sit as close to the trigger as possible. Keep any step that protects the user.

Plain label: shorter path to valueAlso known as: step elimination, time to value, friction removal, login wall, social login, passkeys

How it works

Technologies that strip steps out of an old desire tend to spread, because each step is a point where effort can outweigh motivation. One tap from a message to the content, with no login wall before value, gets more people to the reward that makes them come back.

How to build it

Web
Show results before asking for an account; move non-essential profile fields to after the first win.
Mobile
Magic links or passkeys instead of passwords, and the most common choice selected by default.
E-commerce
Guest checkout with address lookup and saved payment.
B2B
Prefill workspace settings from the sign-up domain and start the user inside a working sample.

What can go wrong

  • Removing a protective step, such as a confirmation before payment.
  • Making sign-up effortless while leaving cancellation hard.

Pairs well with

  • Let people try the core before registering.
  • Ask for investment after the first reward, not before it.
