Ability first: find the missing ingredient before redesigning

For each drop-off, decide what was missing at that moment: the prompt (never saw it), motivation (saw it, didn't care) or ability (started, couldn't finish). Fix the cheapest missing piece, and check ability first, because making something easier is cheaper and faster than making people want it more.

How it works

A behavior happens when motivation, ability and a prompt are present at the same moment. Motivation is costly to raise and comes and goes, while removing effort helps every user at once, so the book ranks friction fixes above tutorials and persuasive copy.

Evidence warning

How to build it

Web
Code exit-survey answers and session replays at each leaky step as prompt, motivation or ability before choosing a fix.
Mobile
If users never opened the push, fix the prompt; if they opened and left, test the screen's effort before its copy.
B2B
For seat activation, separate 'never got the invite', 'got it, no reason to act' and 'stuck in setup'.

What can go wrong

  • Adding a tutorial when the step is simply too hard.
  • Adding reminders when users can't complete the task.
  • Raising motivation with pressure instead of reducing effort.

Pairs well with

  • Name the scarcest resource at the step.
  • Remove steps between the trigger and the first reward.
