Exchangeable Points (GT#75)
A currency users earn and then spend or trade for things they value, unlike progress points that cannot be spent. Chou warns that running an economy is hard: the currency must stay scarce, earn rates need constant rebalancing, and assuming an economy alone creates engagement is a mistake.
Plain label: spendable creditsAlso known as: Exchangeable Points, virtual currency, credits
How it works
Spendable points create ownership and planning (CD4), and scarcity control (CD6) keeps them valued. Chou separates currencies redeemable only inside the product, tradable between users, and tradable outside it. The balance of effort, time, tradability and reward needs ongoing tuning, much as a central bank adjusts rates; inflation destroys the currency's legitimacy and, with it, the motivation.
How to build it
- Web
- Community credits earned by answering questions and redeemable for templates or office-hour slots.
- E-commerce
- Loyalty points with a clear earn rate and rewards worth having, kept separate from status.
- Mobile
- Separate wallets for progress and coins, so spending never feels like losing progress.
What can go wrong
- Inflation: points become plentiful and worthless.
- Rewards not worth the effort, which insults users.
- Real-money trading that brings fraud or gambling problems.
Pairs well with
- Keep status (GT#1) and currency apart.
- Track sources and sinks on an economy dashboard before adding earn paths.
