Rockstar Effect (GT#92)
Let users build an audience that wants to hear from them, such as one-way followers or readers, and mark audience milestones. When people feel they earned that attention, pride keeps them creating and bringing others in.
Plain label: earned audience statusAlso known as: Rockstar Effect, follower milestones
How it works
Twitter's one-way follow turned follower counts into an achievement (CD2) amplified by attention from others (CD5). Chou's case is the 2009 race between Ashton Kutcher and CNN to a million followers, which pulled non-users onto the platform. The effect depends on the status feeling earned; bought or traded followers empty it out, and visible counts can breed status anxiety.
What the research says
In 2009 Ashton Kutcher beat CNN Breaking News to one million Twitter followers; both promoted the platform to their audiences during the race.

How to build it
- Web
- Milestone moments at 100, 1,000 and 10,000 followers, each with a shareable card.
- Mobile
- 'Your post reached 1,200 people' notifications that open a creator dashboard.
- B2B
- Public expert profiles in a customer community, with followers and an accepted-answer count.
What can go wrong
- Follower counts that can be bought or traded.
- Status anxiety from public counts.
- Pressure on friends to follow.
Pairs well with
- Pair audience milestones with GT#57 Brag Buttons.
- Let users hide counts when comparison hurts more than it helps.
