Monetize after the habit forms
Let users reach repeated value before asking them to pay, and show upgrade offers by depth of use (after a number of sessions or items, at moments of progress). Track paid conversion by tenure to see whether it rises as the habit forms, with the business model written next to every habit metric.
Plain label: paywall after the first winsAlso known as: delay monetization, smile graph, conversion by tenure, paywall timing, upgrade timing, free-to-play
How it works
People who rely on a product are less sensitive to its price, so conversion tends to rise with tenure. A paywall before the habit forms converts the few who are already sold and loses the rest before they build the habit that would have made them pay.
Evidence warning
Conversion by tenure is partly selection: people who stay were likelier to pay anyway. Read it as a direction, not proof.
Asking for money at a frustration peak (pay to continue) converts now and erodes trust.
What the research says
A note-taking app reported paid conversion of 0.5% in month 1, 11% by month 33 and 26% by month 42 (company-reported, 2011).

Before you start
- The value event is tracked.
How to build it
- Web
- Show the upgrade offer after the third successful project, not at sign-up.
- Mobile
- A contextual upgrade at a moment of progress, never a block in the middle of a task.
- B2B
- Trigger the upgrade or sales conversation from usage depth (active seats, reports created).
What can go wrong
- Pay-to-continue at frustration peaks.
- Waiting so long that heavy users anchor on free.
Pairs well with
- Charge for depth, never the core loop.
- Free-to-say-no wording on the offer.

Evernote: paying grew with tenure
Paid share about 0.5% after month 1, 11% by month 33 and 26% at month 42, per Phil Libin (2011), as reported in Hooked (Ch1). A book-era figure; Evernote was later acquired by Bending Spoons (not re-verified).

What we don’t claim
- The Hook Model is a practical design tool, not a validated or complete theory of behavior.Hooked, Introduction
- The evidence is correlational until it is tested in your product.
- Habit metrics need the longer habit horizon (weeks to months) before they can be read.
