Sell capability, not relief (OCT-M20)

Walk through the product as a determined non-payer and log every urge to pay: to save time, avoid a loss, remove uncertainty or end frustration. Prefer paid offers that add power users wield over offers that relieve pain the product created; revenue from people paying to play less is a red flag.

How it works

People pay for tools that let them win (CD2, CD3), not for a purchased victory screen. If most revenue comes from people buying their way past the core experience, that core is probably not enjoyable. Chou's own method is to play monetized games seriously while refusing to pay and to note each strong urge to spend. Sorting each urge into empowerment or relief shows whether monetization rests on value or on designed frustration.

How to build it

B2B
Premium adds capacity, automation and integrations users wield, not the removal of artificial waits.
Web
Paid tiers that expand what users can build, while the core loop stays complete for free users.
Mobile
Paid boosts that widen options rather than skip timers the product imposes.

What can go wrong

  • Paywalls around difficulty the product created.
  • Paid skips as the main revenue source.
  • Pay-to-win that cheapens other users' achievements.

Pairs well with

  • Gate depth, never the core loop.
  • Use GT#31 Boosters as the paid unit.
