CD7 Unpredictability & Curiosity
The pull of the unknown and of chance: surprises, mystery rewards, draws and open questions. Chou classes it as Black Hat yet intrinsically thrilling, the Black Hat drive with the most staying power; it is also the main drive behind gambling, and combined with scarcity or loss it turns obsessive or anxious.
Plain label: not knowing what comes nextAlso known as: Unpredictability & Curiosity, Core Drive 7
Essence
Routine runs on autopilot; novelty and uncertainty break through it CD7 (Actionable Gamification Ch.11, p.269). A chance at a reward can engage more than a certain one, because resolving the uncertainty is a thrill of its own. Chou reads the Skinner box as evidence that unpredictable outcomes, not points and badges, drive compulsive behavior.
Position
- Hat: Black. Brain side: Right.
- Strongest phases: Discovery (curiosity spreads when people see others doing something odd), Onboarding (a glowing next step), Endgame (surprise rewards and rolling draws).
Watch-outs
- Pair uncertainty with gains, not losses; uncertain penalties are paralyzing.
- Use variable rewards on short actions; vague long-term uncertainty, such as unclear raises, breeds disloyalty.
- Novelty decays once a sequence is known, so reward pools need renewal.
- Paid randomness is gambling-adjacent; loot boxes are regulated in some countries.
