Build-From-Scratch (GT#43)

Let users create their own thing (name the workspace, choose the layout, assemble the plan) instead of handing them a finished one. People value what they build; Chou's rule is that building must never delay the First Major Win-State, so offer templates first when it would.

Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.StartReturn

Plain label: user-built setupAlso known as: Build-From-Scratch, IKEA effect, customization

How it works

Effort spent creating something raises attachment and the urge to improve it (the IKEA effect, CD4, with CD3 creativity), and it adds switching cost. But creation costs attention, which new users have little of, so a blank canvas can stall activation. Chou's decision rule: when building would delay the first big win, give quick-start templates now and customization later, or make the building itself the first win.

What the research says

  • Norton, Mochon and Ariely found that people value products they assembled themselves more than identical pre-built ones (the IKEA effect).

How to build it

B2B
Onboarding asks users to name the workspace and pick dashboard modules, with 'start from a template' one click away.
Mobile
A habit plan the user assembles from a few suggested blocks.
E-commerce
A bundle or product configurator that ends with a reveal of 'your' creation.

What can go wrong

  • A blank canvas that delays the first win.
  • Customization that can't be exported, which turns into lock-in.
  • Heavy creation asked before users know what good looks like.

Pairs well with

  • Offer templates first when building would delay the first win.
  • Ask for investment after the first win (HK-INV01).
