First use as a complete mini-hook
Make the first session a full small loop: a clear instruction, an easy action, a real win with a moment of celebration, then one small investment that sets up the next visit, such as connecting a calendar or saving a first item.
Plain label: learn-by-doing first sessionAlso known as: first session, onboarding tutorial, first investment, aha moment, first win, one and done
How it works
A passive tour teaches nothing users feel; doing the core action and getting a result does. Ending the first session with one investment gives the product both a reason and permission to bring the user back, which matters because many apps are opened once and never again.
What the research says
About 26% of apps downloaded in 2010 were used only once (analytics firm, as cited in the book).

How to build it
- Mobile
- A task app: add your first task, check it off, see a small celebration, then connect your calendar.
- Web
- A design tool: start from a template, publish one thing in a minute, then save it to your library.
- B2B
- An analytics tool: connect one source, see one real chart, then schedule a weekly email of it.
What can go wrong
- Slideshow tours.
- A permission gate before the win.
- An investment that has nothing to do with the next visit.
Pairs well with
- Ask for permission right after the win.
- Templates before a blank canvas.
