Let users finish what the product starts
Give users something partly built (a template, a sample dashboard, a starter plan picked by goal) and let them complete and name it. Keep the work short enough to finish, because the extra value people place on their own work appears only when it succeeds.
Plain label: build-it-yourself ownershipAlso known as: IKEA effect, customization, templates, co-creation, plan catalog, starter kit
How it works
People value things they helped make more than identical things made for them, but only when the work ends in success; abandoned or failed work loses the effect. Partly built starting points make success likely while leaving real choices to the user.
What the research says
Builders valued their own origami about five times more than neutral bidders did.
Norton, Mochon & Ariely, Journal of Consumer Psychology, 2012
A workspace app reported 51M template duplications by about 11M people in one year (company-reported).

How to build it
- B2B
- Start the user in a pre-configured dashboard they rename and adjust.
- Web
- Templates to remix instead of a blank page, chosen by the problem the user wants to solve.
- Mobile
- A starter plan the user edits before day 1.
What can go wrong
- Busywork that only raises lock-in.
- Setup too long to finish.
Pairs well with
- First use as a mini-hook.
- Make stored value visible.
