Ownership before purchase

Let prospects feel ownership before they buy: trials loaded with their own data, configurators, items reserved in their name, generous returns. Owners value things far above what non-owners would pay, and even imagined ownership raises the value they see.

Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.DiscoverStartPay

Plain label: let people own it before they payAlso known as: endowment effect, trial with your own data

How it works

Owners value an item well above its buying price (the endowment effect, CD4), and random or merely imagined ownership is enough to trigger it. Chou cites a basketball-ticket lottery where winners asked many times what losers would pay. The effect shrinks for goods held for exchange and among experienced traders. It turns into a trap when the trial deletes or locks the user's work to force a purchase.

What the research says

  • Carmon and Ariely (2000) found that Duke basketball ticket-lottery winners asked about $2,400 on average, while losers would pay about $170.

AG Ch8 citing J. Consumer Research (study grade A), 2000

  • List (2003) found that experienced traders show little endowment effect, and that thinking like a trader reduces it.

How to build it

B2B
Trials that import the customer's own data in the first session.
E-commerce
A configurator that ends with the user's design saved, plus generous returns.
Web
A draft visitors can start before signing up and keep after they do.

What can go wrong

  • Deleting trial work to force payment.
  • Calling things 'yours' that the user never chose.
  • Bidding-war tactics that exploit imagined ownership.

Pairs well with

  • Frame conversion as keeping what they built (GT#46).
  • Keep trial work exportable.
