Rightful Heritage (GT#46)
First let users build or accrue something genuinely theirs, then frame conversion as keeping it ('save your draft', 'keep the automations you built'). The honest version rests on real, user-created value; passing off browsing as 'earning' a standard discount is deceptive.
Plain label: keep what you've builtAlso known as: Rightful Heritage, save your work
How it works
Once something feels rightfully yours, the prospect of losing it motivates more than the prospect of gaining the same thing (CD8, built on CD4 ownership). Chou shows the same credits framed as earned and at risk beating the identical offer framed as a free gift. Its strongest honest form lets guests or trial users create real work before the ask, so converting means keeping their own work.
Evidence warning
Deleting or locking a user's work to force an upgrade turns the frame into a data hostage; keep trial work readable or exportable.
How to build it
- Web
- Guests build a cart, playlist or draft before signing up, and the sign-up prompt offers to save it.
- B2B
- At trial end, show what the team built and the hours it saves, and keep it read-only or exportable if they don't pay.
- E-commerce
- A pending loyalty balance from a guest order, claimed by creating an account.
What can go wrong
- 'Earned' value that is really a standard discount.
- Deleting work to force an upgrade.
- Calling value 'yours' before the user did anything.
Pairs well with
- Build ownership first (ownership before purchase).
- Follow conversion with true White Hat reassurance (OCT-M16).
