Value before sign-up: let people try the core

Let visitors use the core of the product before creating an account, and ask for one only when it unlocks something they want to keep, such as saving, syncing or a plan. Landing pages show the product working instead of explaining it.

Plain label: try before registeringAlso known as: guest mode, no registration wall, interactive demo, sandbox, experience over persuasion, informative sample

How it works

An account request before any value is a cost with no visible return. Experiencing the product answers doubts faster than persuasive copy, and the account ask then arrives as a way to keep what the visitor just made. In the book's scripture app, most users never registered and still drove growth.

What the research says

  • A social network's homepage moved from dense explanation to a short line, an image and two calls to action, then steered newcomers to follow accounts (book account, 2009-2013).

How to build it

Web
An interactive demo or sandbox on the landing page, with one main and one secondary call to action.
Mobile
Guest mode for browsing and first use; the account prompt appears on save.
B2B
A live sample workspace with realistic data before sign-up.
E-commerce
Build a cart or wishlist before any account is needed.

What can go wrong

  • Guest mode that loses the user's work at sign-up.
  • An account prompt right after the first click anyway.

Pairs well with

  • Ask for investment after the first reward.
  • Ask for permission after value.

    Round

    Twitter: follow about 30 accounts

Users who followed about 30 accounts became long-term active users, per Twitter's Josh Elman (Hacking Growth excerpt, Apr 25, 2017; also in Hooked, Ch8). Correlational; a variant of 5-10 follows on day one circulates secondhand. Twitter was renamed X in 2023.
