Value before the ask

Deliver something useful before asking for an email, a card or a review: generate the report and then offer to save it, send the mini-audit before the meeting request. People feel a pull to return what they received first, and the ask lands on someone who has already seen the value.

Plain label: give first, then askAlso known as: benefactor before beggar, gift before request, reciprocity, value before sign-up, give-first

How it works

The rule of reciprocation obliges people to repay what others give first, and it works even when the giver is a stranger or not especially liked. A genuine, fitting gift raises the yes to a proportionate ask. A gift that is a pretext, cannot be declined or is far smaller than the ask produces resentment, and it fades once people recognize the pattern.

In the book. Reciprocation is the rule that we repay what others give first (Ch.2, pp.13-15). Moving the gift ahead of the request changed a disliked group's fundraising, and a small unrequested favor doubled purchases in Regan's study (Ch.2, pp.15-18). INF-T-RC-01 (Influence Ch.2, p.17)

In a product [S]. Sequence: value moment, then a clear "here is your result", then a proportionate ask. The gift should be valuable even to someone who never pays.

Evidence Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.. Gifts given first reliably raise response in field research; the effect shrinks once a gift is seen as a tactic.

What the research says

  • In the original study, people who received an unrequested soft drink from a stranger bought about twice as many raffle tickets from him, and their liking for him stopped predicting how many they bought.

    Influence Ch.2, pp.15-16 (Regan), 1971

  • A group that started handing out a small gift before asking for donations funded hundreds of centers, then lost effectiveness once people recognized and avoided the tactic.

    Influence Ch.2, pp.17-18

  • Across mail surveys, a small incentive paid up front raised response rates, while the same incentive promised on completion did not.

How to build it

Web
Let visitors run the core job before creating an account (paste a URL, get the report), then ask for an email to save or share the result.
B2B
Send a short, personalized benchmark or audit the prospect can act on alone, then ask for the meeting in the same message.
Email and SMS
Before an upgrade or review ask, give something that fits the current task (a template, credits, an unlocked report) with a clean "No thanks".
Mobile
Show a working preview or sample result on the first screen and ask for sign-up when the user wants to keep it.

What can go wrong

  • The "gift" is a gated teaser with no standalone value.
  • The ask is far larger than the gift (a free checklist, then an annual contract).
  • The gift cannot be declined, which reads as pressure.

Pairs well with

  • Pairs with HK-INV01: ask for effort after the reward, not before.
  • Pairs with in-t-fn-01: the ask that follows the gift still needs a real reason.
