Case · M4 × Return (resurrecting lapsed users)
Duolingo: the Streak Revival event
In June 2026 Duolingo ran a one-time event: lapsed learners could restore their longest-ever streak by opting in and finishing three lessons. 15.4M learners revived a streak, nearly 8M of them with no active streak (Q2 2026 shareholder letter).
The outcome · 2026
15.4M learners revived their streaks, including nearly 8M who had no active streak when the event began (Q2 2026 shareholder letter, Aug 5, 2026). Q2 2026 DAU were 58.7M, up 23% year over year; many causes.

What they did. A one-time, opt-in event: complete three lessons and your longest-ever streak comes back.
The mechanism. [Analyst inference] Something that feels rightfully yours pulls hardest when it is about to be lost or can be regained GT#46 (Actionable Gamification Ch.12, p.326). Pairing the offer with a small, genuine action is lapse recovery done forgivingly HK-RWD34 (Hooked Ch.4), delivered as a re-engagement message HK-TRG35 (Hooked Ch.7), and the restored number is a commitment record people want to keep consistent with INF-T-CC-11 (Influence Ch.3, p.58).

What it means at your stage. For M4-M5 products with a dormant base, stored value is a resurrection lever: give it back in exchange for real use, not for a payment. Measure 30-day retention of revived users, not just revivals.
Caveats. The count is company-reported in a filed letter; downstream retention of revived learners was not disclosed. Mechanism link Evidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested. [Analyst].

The techniques behind it
Each one is a starting point, not a recipe. Gamify It turns a technique into an experiment card for your product: the change, the metric, the guardrail and how long the test needs at your traffic.
- TechniqueEvidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies.
Guilt-free lapse message
an easy way back after missed days
When someone misses a few days, send one short note that offers to pick up where they left off or switch to a lighter version. No shame, no threats of loss, and no series of escalating emails.
- TechniqueEvidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.
Streaks and completion chains with a safety valve
a visible chain you can repair
Mark each finished unit with a clear 'done' moment and a visible chain of days, and ship forgiveness with it: freezes, repair windows, rest days, partial credit and a running total that survives a break. Never let one miss erase everything.
- TechniqueEvidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested.
Rightful Heritage (GT#46)
keep what you've built
First let users build or accrue something genuinely theirs, then frame conversion as keeping it ('save your draft', 'keep the automations you built'). The honest version rests on real, user-created value; passing off browsing as 'earning' a standard discount is deceptive.
- TechniqueEvidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested.
Mild, revivable decay on the user's cadence
gentle decay with recovery
Let invested assets fade slowly when users stay away, with a warning before anything decays, a cadence the user chose and an easy way to revive what wilted. Chou's cautionary tale: harsh decay in a farm game raised daily use until worn-out players quit for good.
