Mild, revivable decay on the user's cadence

Let invested assets fade slowly when users stay away, with a warning before anything decays, a cadence the user chose and an easy way to revive what wilted. Chou's cautionary tale: harsh decay in a farm game raised daily use until worn-out players quit for good.

Plain label: gentle decay with recoveryAlso known as: decay mechanics, virtual responsibilities

How it works

When something users invested in decays, a missed visit costs money, time and effort at once, which creates a strong pull to return (CD8 on top of CD4 ownership). Harsh versions turn play into chores: alarms at dawn, asking relatives to log in. Mild, revivable decay keeps the reminder without the dread, and tying the cadence to the user's own goals keeps it out of sleep and work time.

How to build it

Mobile
A virtual plant that wilts slowly and recovers fully after one session, on a schedule the user set.
Web
Progress that softens after weeks of inactivity, with a warning email first and a one-click restore.
B2B
Stale-data indicators that gently fade dashboards and explain how to refresh them.

What can go wrong

  • Short windows that intrude on sleep.
  • Permanent loss ('death') after a short absence.
  • Decay before users have anything worth protecting.

Pairs well with

  • Add forgiving loss rules (grace systems).
  • Use only after users have built something they value.
